2027: Why I Want To Be President For One Single Term – Peter Obi Explains 2025-07-07 politics

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has explained that his decision to run for one term of four years in 2027 is to respect the sanctity of zoning.

This was as Obi said zoning has been a stabiliser of Nigeria’s polity despite not being in the country’s constitution.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obi said four years is enough for any serious and sincere leader to make an impact.

He said: “One term is enough to establish that good governance is possible, and if they can impact negatively on us for just two years, why won’t someone achieve a lot in four years?

“It’s also to respect the gentleman’s agreement of zoning, which has been a stabilising factor even though it’s not in our constitution.

“I don’t need a day more than four years. I will show the direction of good governance. In two years, there has been maximum damage.

“Two years can change it in a good direction. People want to get up and see a president who cares and shows compassion.”

Recently, Obi had said he would run for a single term and hand over.

‘We Can’t Take This Anymore’ – NLC Threatens Mass Action Over Rising Poverty, Insecurity 2025-07-07 local

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has threatened to embark on nationwide protest over the rising insecurity, poverty and high cost-of-living crisis in the country.

This is as it warned that Nigerian workers would no longer sit idly by while the nation’s economy and democracy crumble.

NLC in a communiqué signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, and the General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, said the almost 700,000 lives lost in just a year to insecurity in Nigeria can only happen in nations at war.

It also warned that when farmers could not access their lands to farm, famine becomes a looming danger.

The Congress condemned what it called the government’s failure to secure lives and property and demanded immediate action.

“The time for talk shops and promises has passed; what is needed now are actions,” it warned.

NLC urged the government to immediately declare a state of emergency on insecurity and order security agencies to deal decisively with the criminals, especially armed herders and bandits, without mercy.

“The contradictions of Nigeria’s political economy have deepened the precarious state of working people and further exposed the fragility of the social contract. At this point, Nigerians are feeling deeply abandoned,” it added.

Security sources who also confirmed the arrest, said the troops who were acting on credible intelligence, intercepted the suspect while he was on his way to deliver the arms and ammunition to terrorists.

The suspect, who hails from Kafi Abu village in Barkin Ladi LGA, is currently in the custody of troops for further investigation and necessary action.

Rainstorm Destroys Over 100 Houses In Kebbi Community 2025-07-07 local

More than 100 houses were destroyed following a heavy rainstorm that struck Zogirma village in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State over the weekend.

The downpour, which occurred between Saturday night and early Sunday, left several residents injured and dozens of families displaced, according to community members.

Daily Post gathered that the Secretary of Bunza Local Government, Malam Muhammed Umar Mawo, visited the affected village to assess the situation and sympathise with victims on behalf of the council chairman.

Local authorities have begun compiling a report on the extent of the damage for submission to the state government, with the aim of securing relief materials and other forms of support.

Displaced residents have called for urgent assistance, including roofing materials, food, and medical aid, as they struggle to recover from the impact of the storm.

NLC Demands Immediate Release Of Osun LG Allocations 2025-07-07 local

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the unconditional and immediate release of all withheld local government allocation to the lawfully elected governments in Osun State.

The body also asked the Attorney-General to retract all “unlawful directives” to federal financial institutions and cease further politicization of Local Government autonomy.

This was contained in a communique issued after the meeting of the NLC’s National Administrative Council (NAC) and the Central Working Committee held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Signed by Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of NLC and Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, the General Secretary, the body condemned the partisan intervention, saying it had undermined grassroots governance, deprived workers of pay, and sabotaged key services, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Part of the communique reads, “The CWC reaffirmed its position in support of genuine local government autonomy as a cornerstone for grassroots development, accountability, and democratic participation.

“The Congress called on all stakeholders engaged in the constitutional review process to enshrine provisions that safeguard the financial and administrative independence of local governments.

“It reviewed with grave concern the deliberate withholding and diversion of statutory allocations due to the democratically elected Local Government Councils in Osun State, orchestrated by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation in collusion with the Minister of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“This act constitutes a blatant violation of the Constitution, the Fiscal Responsibility Act, and the judgment of the Court of Appeal affirming the legitimacy of the current Local Government leadership in Osun State.

“The CWC condemns in strongest terms this partisan interference, which undermines grassroots governance, deprives workers of their wages, and sabotages essential services such as primary healthcare, education, and infrastructure”.

NLC, however, warned that failure to comply in a fair amount of time would prompt action to defend workers’ rights and enforce the law.

Reports that the Osun Local Government crisis stems from a prolonged stalemate between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the legitimacy of council officials.

This led to both parties claiming the 30 council secretariats and the Area Office, leading to industrial action by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) since February and violent clashes between APC and PDP supporters.
