FCT Area Council Workers Suspend Strike | 2025-07-14 | ![]() |
local | The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, chapter has suspended its three-month strike following the intervention of the minister, Nyesom Wike. The suspension was announced by the union in a statement, jointly signed by its president, Ibrahim Kabir, and secretary, Andulmumini Sa’ad, in Abuja on Monday. According to the union, its State Executive Council, SEC, resolved to suspend the strike effective from midnight after exhaustive deliberation on Monday. The union further said that the development followed Wike’s directive to utilise area councils’ 10 percent Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, to offset the workers’ three months’ salary arrears. It said that another resolution was for NULGE to work with the Special Committee constituted by Wike to harmonise all outstanding arrears within two weeks. This, according to the union, was to ensure a holistic resolution through the National Assembly House Committee on FCT and Ancillary Matters. The workers added that the union would engage with the area council chairmen to address outstanding issues. “NULGE is committed to sustaining industrial peace and harmony within the council and FCT at large. “The union expresses its profound gratitude to the FCT minister, the traditional council of FCT, and all relevant stakeholders for their efforts in resolving the industrial action,” the workers said. The union identified the outstanding issues as a 40 percent peculiar allowance from January 2023 to date and 25 percent and 35 percent salary adjustments from June 2023. Other issues are the N35,000 wage award for six months from August 2024 to date, unremitting pension deductions, promotion arrears, and other outstanding entitlements. “The union remains committed to engaging with the area council chairmen on the remaining entitlements and looks forward to a swift resolution of all outstanding issues,” the statement said. |

N6.9bn Fraud: After Seven Years, Fayose To Know Fate On Tuesday | 2025-07-14 | ![]() |
local | Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose is set to learn his fate tomorrow, Tuesday, July 15, in the N6.9 billion fraud case that has lasted nearly seven years. Justice Chukujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, will decide on the “no case submission” filed by Fayose’s legal team. The ruling was originally scheduled for July 10 but was postponed because the judge was absent. Fayose and his company, Spotless Investment Limited, face an 11-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC alleges Fayose received N1.2 billion to fund his 2014 election campaign and took $5 million in cash from former Minister Musiliu Obanikoro, avoiding financial institutions. At the last hearing on May 19, Fayose’s lead lawyer, Chief Kalu Agabi (SAN), said the prosecution failed to prove a case. He argued, “All the witnesses and exhibits were based on mere speculation and do not justify continuing the trial.” Agabi also pointed out that a key figure in the case, Abiodun Agbele, was not charged alongside Fayose. He added that; “criminal breach of trust and conspiracy are different charges, and no co-conspirator was charged with my client.” The EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), asked the court to dismiss the no-case submission. He said the defendants failed to explain suspicious financial transactions and questioned why Fayose did not use his own bank accounts if the money was legitimate. The court’s decision will determine whether Fayose must open his defence or be freed from the charges. |

KEDCO Announces Another Reduction In Power Supply To Kano, Jigawa, Katsina | 2025-07-14 | ![]() |
local | The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced that power supply to Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina States has dropped further to an average of 130 megawatts (MW). The update was contained in a statement by KEDCO spokesperson, Sani Bala Sani. According to the statement, KEDCO said this reduced supply is not enough to meet the needs of all customers, causing more load shedding and power outages in the area. “The drop in electricity is due to a problem on the Shiroro–Kaduna transmission line that happened early Monday morning. This added to an earlier fault on the Uguaji–Makurdi–Jos lines, which had already lowered power supply from over 300MW to 167MW,” the statement read in part. The KEDCO management however assured customers that it is working closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to fix the problem and restore normal power supply as soon as possible. The company apologized for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing power shortages. |

local | The Borno Government has resettled more than 3,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) into 500 newly constructed mass housing units in Dara Jamal community, Bama Local Government Area. The relocation was carried out on Monday as part of the state’s ongoing Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement (RRR) programme aimed at rebuilding conflict-affected communities across the state. The beneficiaries had been taking refuge at Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) in Bama town for several years before relocating them into the permanent homes in Dara Jamal. Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman, Committee on Resettlement of Dara Jamal, Lawan Wakilbe, who is also the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, said the exercise was in line with the state government’s vision to restore dignity and livelihoods to displaced persons. “The State Government reconstituted the Bama Reconstruction Committee in 2023 with a renewed mandate – to rebuild Dara Jamal, commence the reconstruction of Maiyinti, continue works in Tarmuwa, and begin reconstruction in Kumshe. “Today, we are pleased to announce the successful completion of 500 houses in Dara Jamal and the resettlement of more than 3,000 displaced persons. “Dara Jamal is one of several communities in the Bama local government area that were heavily impacted by the Boko Haram insurgency,” Wakibe said. He disclosed that in addition to the 500 permanent housing units, the state government had also planned to construct 1,000 temporary shelters to accommodate another 3,000 people, particularly returnees engaged in the ongoing farming season. “As part of the support package, the Borno state government provided each head of household with N100,000 and an additional N25,000 to each wife,” he said. He added that the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) also contributed relief materials, including 25kg bags of rice, three litres of cooking oil, mattresses, mats, and cartons of spaghetti. “We are grateful to the Federal Government, through the National Refugee Commission, for the resettlement support packages and to the Borno state government for the financial palliatives. “We thank the Army, Police, Civil Defence, and Vigilante Groups for their unwavering commitment and visible presence in Dara Jamal,” Wakilbe stated. He added that the initiative was part of the state’s broader commitment to rebuilding communities destroyed by insurgency and returning displaced persons to their ancestral homes. According to Wakilbe, the Borno government aims to close all IDP camps and complete the resettlement of displaced persons by the end of 2027. |

DAPPMAN Credits NMDPRA For Fuel Price Drop, Cites Two Other Sector Gains | 2025-07-14 | ![]() |
business | The Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, DAPPMAN, has said the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s commitment to competitiveness has contributed to petroleum product price reduction in the country. The Executive Secretary of DAPPMAN, Olufemi Adewole, disclosed this in a recent statement, lauding the Farouk Ahmed-led NMDPRA reforms in Nigeria’s downstream sector. DAPPMAN noted that with the regulatory framework of the agency, the Nigerian government has been able to reduce the number of illegal refineries and improve petroleum product quality nationwide. “The commitment of the NMDPRA to fostering a competitive market, enhancing energy security, and encouraging innovation as the sector responds to unfolding global oil and gas market challenges and opportunities,” he said. “We have witnessed an unprecedented reduction in illegal refining and improved product quality through the Authority’s enforcement of standards,” he added. This comes amid mounting calls for Ahmed’s sack as NMDPRA Chief Executive. Recall that barely a week ago, civil society groups and lawyers stormed the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly, and other places in Abuja, demanding the probe and sack of Ahmed. Meanwhile, other groups had described protests against Ahmed as sponsored and politically motivated. |
